...there was cake. As a little girl, my mom always made our cakes. There was nothing more exciting than turning a year older and it being my special day. It's a day to celebrate coming into this world, and all that you are. And what better way to celebrate, than to eat cake? Mom was always creative, and customized each cake to whatever we were into at the time. Everything was made from scratch, and there was never a crumb left behind (especially not in a family of eight!).
We usually had cakes on Sundays after supper. I especially remember Grandama's boiled raisin cake w/ chocolate frosting. The recipe goes back to her great Grandma & maybe further back. Its still a favorite of my brothers' and they get one all to themselves about once a year, compliments of their mama.
So, I guess its in my blood. Funny thing is, I didn't know it until I had kids of my own, and they started having birthdays. Now, I won't lie and say I have made every single cake. I got Kassidy's 1st birthday cake from Wally's, and have always wished I could turn back time and make her an Elmo cake. Instead it was tinkerbell. Why? It was cute and she was a girl. I knew I should have gone with Elmo. I have since learned, go with your gut. In most cases, in life - it won't let you down. Especially if you keep it fed!
So, with each birthday (after the Tinkerbell/Elmo deal I had) I have committed to make my own kids cakes. I am in no way and by no means a professional, but I have put my OCD tendencies to work, and I now make and decorate cakes for fun. I enjoy it, and what fun is cake if you don't share it? So, here it is. Let's eat cake!!
